An interesting alternative to Google Earth

When it comes to exploring the globe, there’s usually only one choice on the table – Google Earth.

However, Google’s groundbreaking Earth navigation application isn’t the only option out there, as Marble proves. Marble is a virtual globe and World atlas that allows you to learn more about the Earth. It enables you to pan and zoom around the planet, inspect landmarks, places and roads, and is enlivened by lots of useful links to Wikipedia articles.

You can do all the standard things like measure distances, lay down place markers and obtain coordinates for a specific location. One nice little feature is that you can also observe the cloud cover in a particular location and even lay ‘filters’ over the globe. These include a topographic map, satellite view, street map, Earth at night, and temperature maps. Marble has therefore clearly been designed more with educators and classrooms in mind than Google Earth.

The downside of Marble is that it’s rather selective in the regions it covers. Western countries are annotated and illustrated in great detail, while the rest of the world – especially the southern hemisphere – is lacking in information.

Marble is an interesting alternative to Google Earth that’s completely free to use and ideal for educators.

PROS

  • Different themes and filters

  • Shows current cloud conditions

  • Tailored for educators

CONS

  • Some parts of the globe are covered much better than others

Lose Your Marbles is your standard puzzle game. The object is to get rid of as many marbles as you can as quickly as possible. This is accomplished by lining up at least three marbles of the same color in the Pitch line (the middle row). You deal with five columns of marbles, and as the game wears on, more marbles fill each column.
Every time you eliminate 3 or 4 of the color of the marble above the marble Counter, you increase the counter. When you make 5 marbles disappear at once, you dump more on your opponent. This number depends on how many marbles are on the marble Counter. Seem confusing? Don’t worry – it’s much easier than it sounds.

Exploding Marbles is a cool, all new 3D marble arcade game For Windows, released under the GPL license. Take a look at this game’s features:

  • excellent 3d graphics
  • superb animations
  • terrific sound effects
  • soothing music
  • highscore table
  • options for sound, music and mouse speed
  • great looking menu
  • and much more to explore!
As I kid I was forever playing with marbles. I don’t think I ever learned the real rules though and would instead use them to plug orifices, throw at people or set up boobie traps. So, Mystic Marbles gave me a chance to enjoy the game in a safer way, and I was suprisingly pleased with the grown-up version. This is not an exact replication of the game (that would be boring) but rather some kind of Bubble Bobble/Arkanoid hybrid set within a mystical environment.

The original gameplay works very well and Mythic Marbles is great fun. The controls are simple and see you bounce off walls and smash bricks to proceed through the levels.

Each puzzle is different enough to prevent the game from becoming dull and the graphics are pretty good too. I found that the sound got a bit annoying after a while, but overall it beats getting a little ball stuck up your nose.

  • Varied puzzles

  • Cool graphics

CONS

  • Annoying music and FX

After Tetris appeared, many games that have been launched have maintained a game system that is similar, in which the most important feature is to eliminate all kinds of blocks or pieces, with the objective of surviving level after level.

Remove all the marbles of the same color

Marbles is a puzzle in which we have to eliminate balls of the same color (joining three at a time), with the objective of gaining time (a fundamental element to survive in this game). As we advance in the game, new kinds of balls will appear, thanks to which we will be able to eliminate full lines or gain extra time.

With regard to the graphics, even though it has a very simple design, it is very colorful, a fact which children will find highly appealing.

If you like puzzle games like Tetris, Columns or Puzzle Bubble, you should try out Marbles, because it mixes some elements of the aforementioned titles, and it allows us to exercise our brain while we have a good time.
