This freeware file-compression tool doesn’t bother with a fancy interface, but makes sure to include some helpful features. WinShrink’s simple interface uses a few buttons and pulldown menus to make the utility easy to learn, and operate, but it’s still robust enough for experienced users. You’re not going to find an extensive Help manual here, but inexperienced users can learn the app quickly through simple testing.

Operating WinShrink is primarily accomplished through the app’s pulldown menus. It’s a testament to the program’s flexibility that hot keys and buttons are also available for most commands. Creating an archive is a mere matter of selecting “New.” From there users merely need to choose files or folders through the common Windows file-browse dialog. Radio buttons are used to set archive type. WinShrink can create Arj, BH, CAB, gZIP, Jar, Lha, Tar, or Zip files. Three levels of compression are available, as are options to encrypt and set the archive as read only. We found archiving speed comparable to most tools in the genre.

WinShrink also includes some features rarely found in freeware tools. With a minimum of clicks, the app easily converts one archive type to another. The program’s job wizard makes it very quick and easy to create special jobs to zip My Documents, Desktop, Favorites, E-mail, or all four. The beauty is any of the jobs can be scheduled or set to automatically upload through FTP.

WinShrink certainly won’t wow anyone with a fancy interface, but this app is a solid file archiver that will appeal to users at any experience level.

WinShrink is a file compression utility that supports the latest and most common compression format including ZIP, RAR, ACE, 7Z (7-Zip), TAR, CAB, LHA, ARC, ARJ, BH, JAR, and ZOO. WinShrink also has the ability to encrypt archives, schedule archiving, back-up your zipped file to a remote FTP location, create self unzipping files.
