Apple’s iPod, when used with iTunes software, may be the most popular portable music player in the world. Even people who use a different music player often have iTunes installed on their computers. Getting music files from your PC or the Internet to an iPod is easy with iTunes, but it involves multiple steps and could be improved. It is, with Tunestor. It’s a free tool that works with iTunes to download MP3s and other music files to your iPod with two easy clicks. It has an online bookmarking feature that helps keep track of the tunes you download, and you can explore and buy music with it from the Tunestor Web site.

At a bit over 388KB, Tunestor is a tiny download, but it’s easy to install, thanks to the familiar Windows installer and EULA screen. Tunestor integrates with your browser and adds a command option to the context menu, “Download Directly to iTunes.” You simply right-click a music file, choose the command, and Tunestor automatically downloads the file to its music folder, simultaneously adding it to the “Tunestor Downloads” playlist in iTunes. Tunestor automatically syncs the files to your iPod when you connect it to your PC.

Tunestor is freeware that works in most versions of Windows from 98 to Vista. It requires iTunes version 4.7 or higher as well as a recent edition of Internet Explorer or Firefox. It leaves folders behind when it’s uninstalled, and it may not install properly in the most recently updated version of Firefox.
