DropZip
This simple application unzips files in a snap–even the RAR files that the Windows tool can’t open–but just a little user guidance would be nice.
When you install DropZip, it automatically adds an icon to the Quick Launch toolbar. Drag ZIP or RAR files onto the programs icon, and DropZip quickly decompresses them. The program can zip folders too, although it only handles one at a time.
Here’s the catch: if you remove the program from the Quick Launch toolbar, you won’t be able to unzip or zip files. Unlike similar programs, it doesn’t offer Windows integration or allow you to launch the program and unzip files. Drag and drop isn’t one way to unzip your files, it’s the only way with this freeware program.
A basic help file would go a long way in preventing any user confusion. That said, DropZip is a nice complement to standard Windows file compression tools, and it costs nothing to use.
WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 1
You can drag a ZIP or RAR file (or even multiple ZIP/RAR files) onto the DropZip icon and they will be magically unzipped into a folder with the same name as each ZIP or RAR file, for example. Drag your Zip file hello.zip from My Documents onto the icon. Look in My Documents, there will be a new folder called hello.
It also has another feature if you drop a folder (it must be one folder on its own) then that folder will be converted to a ZIP file (note the folder won’t be deleted). This is not designed to be a replacement for your normal ZIP or RAR programs; instead, it is designed for convenience when you need to quickly unzip or unrar something.
